When crew cab pickups became mainstream around 2000, their roomy, four-door cabins seemed liberating, but they required the cargo beds to be shorter, a significant drawback. The 2002 Avalanche addressed the issue with a trick midgate that folded down to extend the bed into the cab, effectively turning a short-bed crew cab into a long-bed regular cab.
